IHE Library's collection has expanded so much (about 4,000 books) that we can no longer keep all the books in the library. We have placed new bookshelves in the back of Room 5--which makes the back of Room 5 part of the library now.
So how are the books organized now?
In
an earlier blog, I described how the books are organized by subject using the
Library of Congress classification schedule. This way, books about a specific subject will be with other books on the same subject. When you are researching a topic, once you find one useful book in our library, you can find others nearby.
The books' call numbers begin with a letter. If the first letter of a book's call number is between A and Q, look in Room 5. If the letter is between R and Z, it is in the main room of the Library, next door to Room 5. The exception is books with call numbers beginning with "REF": these are
reference books, which are kept in the section of Room 5 farthest from the door.
The volumes in Room 5 include (but are not limited to) books about history (D-F), social sciences (H), language and literature (P), and science (Q). The books in the main room of the Library are mostly about medicine (R), so if you are in any of IHE's allied health programs, most of the books you need regularly will be in there. However, you may have to use the Room 5 collections sometimes. For example, books about anatomy and physiology are in the Q section. Also, if you're looking for a good book to read for pleasure, peruse the P section.
Kits, periodicals, and VHS tapes are now in Room 5; CDs, DVDs, and flash cards are still in the main room.
