The Expanding IHE Library: Where Is Everything?

IHE Library's collection has expanded so much (about 4,000 books) that we can no longer keep all the books in the library.  We have placed new bookshelves in the back of Room 5--which makes the back of Room 5 part of the library now.

So how are the books organized now?

In an earlier blog, I described how the books are organized by subject using the Library of Congress classification schedule.  This way, books about a specific subject will be with other books on the same subject.  When you are researching a topic, once you find one useful book in our library, you can find others nearby.

The books' call numbers begin with a letter.  If the first letter of a book's call number is between A and Q, look in Room 5.  If the letter is between R and Z, it is in the main room of the Library, next door to Room 5.  The exception is books with call numbers beginning with "REF":  these are reference books, which are kept in the section of Room 5 farthest from the door.

The volumes in Room 5 include (but are not limited to) books about history (D-F), social sciences (H), language and literature (P), and science (Q).  The books in the main room of the Library are mostly about medicine (R), so if you are in any of IHE's allied health programs, most of the books you need regularly will be in there.  However, you may have to use the Room 5 collections sometimes.  For example, books about anatomy and physiology are in the Q section. Also, if you're looking for a good book to read for pleasure, peruse the P section.

Kits, periodicals, and VHS tapes are now in Room 5; CDs, DVDs, and flash cards are still in the main room.

As always, you must check out materials with the librarian, who is very happy to help you find what you need.

Micropower and IHE Libraries Together in Consortium

If you have been wondering where your IHE librarian has been this week, I shall tell you:  at the library of our sister school, Micropower Career Institute (http://www.mpow.edu/), specifically, the Manhattan campus.  (There are also campuses in Newark, Queens, Mineola, and Hauppage.)  Like IHE, Micropower offers programs for adults who want to become certified medical or dental assistants and EKG and Phlebotomy technicians.  There are also programs in computer networking, becoming a nurse's aide, and computerized business accounting.  Also like IHE, Micropower has classes for students of English as a second language.

The Manhattan campus has books, CDs, DVDs, and other materials about these subjects, so I have been organizing and cataloging them.  You can even look them up in IHELLO, the same online catalog used for IHE Library materials.  If you want to find books at Micropower, you can use "Micropower" as a search term.

When you find a resource in IHELLO, look at the bottom of the screen:

Status Bar Code Branch Location Call Number Volume Issue
IN30003970MicropowerStacksQA76.3 .A5624 2008

IN30003977MicropowerStacksQA76.3 .A5624 2008

Notice that in the Branch column is the word Micropower.  As you can imagine, this means that the book is at Micropower.  (If this column were blank, the book would be located at IHE.)

If you are an IHE student and you find a book at Micropower's library in IHELLO (or vice versa), contact your librarian.

IHELLO stands for the Institute for Health Education Lending Library Online, but now that the library also includes Micropower's resources, should we change the name?  Maybe to MIHELLO? MILO?

Welcome Back! New Titles, November 7, 2012

IHE reopened its doors yesterday.  Like much of Jersey City, we were out of power, but now we’re back in operation.

Our building was not damaged, but there are many that were.  If you’d like to help out those who were hit badly by Hurricane Sandy, now might be the perfect time to volunteer.  Hoboken, for example, can use a helping hand from some health professionals.  A quick internet search will show you where you can volunteer.
