Default Prevention Advice

Our default prevention counselor, Annamaria Carmen, has a Facebook page.  You may have seen Annamaria speak at IHE about managing your loans.  Look at her page to see announcements related to your finances.  For example, she just posted:
Good morning everyone!! As a reminder, the 2012 tax season is a great time to select an affordable repayment plan for your Federal Student loans. Contact your school counselor directly at (646) 738-7986 for more information or visit StudentAid.Ed.Gov and click on "How Do I Manage My Loans" then "Repayment Plans" then "Get Details About Repayment Plans". If you have already filed your 2012 Tax Return, apply for a new repayment plan if you have financial hardship. If you are in the process of filing your 2012 Tax return, check out the calculators under "Quick Links" to see what your estimated monthly payments could be. Some students can be approved for very low even $0 per month payments and avoid delinquency without the need to apply for deferments or forbearances! Please take advantage of these new opportunities! — in Jersey City.

The IHE Library is now open only on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. If you'd like to meet with your librarian, you may want to make an appointment or at least call ahead.  You can email me at agerber@ihe.edu or call me at (201) 217-1113.

The newest resource in the IHE Library is a book called The Psychology of the Body by Elliot Greene and Barbara Goodrich-Dunn (call number RM721 .G773 2013, ISBN 9781608311569).  It's written for massage therapy students, but if you are interested in the relationship between people's minds and bodies, you might find this book interesting.

Most of these books, CDs, and DVDs are about English.  This is because of IHE’s expanding English as a Second Language programs.  Most of these books can be found in Room 5 in the bookshelves closest to the hallway.  The CD and DVD collection is next door in the Learning Resource Center.

Fight the flu

The Institute for Health Education Library is an affiliate member of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Middle Atlantic Region.  Therefore, I sometimes receive important information about health-related information.  Here are some excepts from one such email that I received.  It includes information on how during this flu epidemic you can use knowledge to protect your health.
New York and Boston have declared Public Health Emergencies.  Dr. Anthony Facui, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health, has indicated that we are in what is classically described as a flu epidemic.  In response to this, as librarians and information specialists, we can share messages through our social media communication tools on reliable and trustworthy health information.
Below are suggested messages developed by the Health and Human Services New Media Team.  Consider using them on your accounts this week!

The Pact:  Three Young Men Make a Promise and Fulfill a Dream is a nonfiction book about three doctors who, according to the back cover, “grew up on the streets of Newark, facing city life's temptations, pitfalls, even jail.  But one day these three young men made a pact.  They promised each other they would all become doctors, and stick it out together through the long, difficult journey to attain that dream.  Sampson Davis, George Jenkins, and Rameck Hunt are not only friends to this day—they are all doctors.  This is a story about the power of friendship.  Of joining forces and beating the odds.  A story about changing your life, and the lives of those you love most…together.

Some of these books have connections to others you may have read.  Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is the first book in a famous series.  The Golden Compass begins the trilogy His Dark Materials, an even more challenging British fantasy series popular with adults and children.  The Lost Symbol is the latest adventure of Robert Landgon, the hero of Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code.  The Silmarrillion includes stories that take place in the same world as Tolkien’s most famous works, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
